Ciara Admits: Athletes Get Me Going

While some singers find inspiration from music legends, Ciara says she looks toward icons with a little more muscle.
“I take my motivation from athletes – basketball players in particular,” the R&B songstress, 23, tells Men’s Health magazine in its November 2008 issue.
And there are a few NBA stars whom she finds especially inspiring.
“I love LeBron James because he’s my age and full of ambition and drive,” she reveals. Also, “I love Michael Jordan … there was so much pressure, but he pulled through every time. That energy motivates me.”
Ciara, a former high school track star, says her most recent source of motivation was watching New York Giant David Tyree’s performance during this year’s Super Bowl.
“The way he held on to that ball that Eli Manning threw – I felt what he had inside,” she says, adding, “when it comes to my career, there’s nothing more exciting than being successful at the highest possible level.”

Women In Music Honorees

Ciara, Deborah Harry and Colbie Caillat will be honored at Billboard’s third annual Women in Music breakfast, to be held Oct. 24 at New York’s St. Regis Hotel.
Ciara will receive the Woman of the Year award, which recognizes success as a recording artist and leadership in embracing the changing music business. Harry will be honored with the Icon award, given to a woman whose art and career have blazed trails for successive generations.
Caillat, who broke through last year with her debut album, “CoCo,” will receive the Rising Star award, acknowledging early success and greatest potential among artists who have released two or fewer albums.
Billboard’s Women in Music issue will be published Oct. 24. The list of executives is selected and ranked by Billboard’s editorial staff and does not include artists and songwriters. Billboard editors vote on several criteria: the ability of the executive to green light major projects; the success of that executive in the previous 12 months; and the professional demeanor and leadership demonstrated by the executive.

Ciara, whose third album, Fantasy Ride, debuts next month, has just wrapped up a daylong photo shoot. Yet she bounds into the makeup room and offers her visitor a firm, earnest handshake that exudes confidence and energy. Her appearance also makes an impression: She has changed out of a plunging white gown into a simple gray T-shirt, black leggings, and a pair of Uggs. But she still looks stunning and radiates the kind of youthful confidence that comes only from achieving lofty goals early in life.
Like many of her idols on the court and gridiron, Ciara found her ambition early. “When I was growing up in Atlanta,” she says, “I was always striving for something. I was always setting goals and trying to be somebody.” She burst onto the music scene in 2004 with her debut album, Goodies. It spawned hit singles with Missy Elliott and Ludacris, sold 3 million copies, and earned her two Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. She cowrote every song on her follow-up, The Evolution, which sold more than 1 million, and she’s hoping her fans will equally embrace Fantasy Ride.
Ciara admits that it’s hard to find time for dating, concentrating as she is on her music these days. But she does know this: She won’t waste her time with men who don’t possess the intensity of focus that she does, who aren’t always moving the ball forward. “I like for a guy to have his own thing going on, to have strong drive and focus—because that motivates me,” she says. “You can tell it’s there when you talk to him, but it also shows in the way he carries himself—how he moves around a room. That confidence shows through, that swagger. It’s really intriguing to me, and I need to see this sort of great potential before I even talk to him.”
Ciara Shows How to Keep Your Focus—in Life and Love
1. Concentrate on What’s Inside
“During the first 6 months of getting to know somebody, it’s fun. But even if you want to move fast, you need to pump the brakes every now and then so you can learn about the person behind that cute face. You do that by building a friendship.”
2. Don’t Let Her Consume You
“Even when you’re in a relationship, keep yourself on course. It’s natural to veer off and be consumed by your other half’s world, because love drives you to do that. You’re so happy and all you want is more and more of that person. That’s fine, but never lose sight of your own priorities.”
3. Keep It Simple
“You don’t have to accessorize with big, gaudy chains. Less is more. You can make a much stronger statement with a white T-shirt and jeans. And always have nice shoes—we notice that.”
4. Learn with Lightness
“I like to go out to dinner. I like to go to the movies. These are things that give you the opportunity to learn about a person’s tastes—what they laugh at. That says a lot.”
5. Mind Your Manners
“It’s important for a guy to be a gentleman. I like some toughness, but not too much. He has to take the time to understand who I am. A lot of times, men are like, ‘You’re fun. You’re cute. I like you,’ and I think, Are you listening to what I’m saying? You should get to know me—the things I like and the things I don’t like—’cause I’m doing the same with you.”

Cc's Fantasy Ride!!

Ciara keeps the female-empowerment message alive on “Go Girl,” the first single from her upcoming album, Fantasy Ride. The R&B songbird said the song, which features T-Pain on the hook, is all about “someone that’s strong, determined and independent.”
“T-Pain is a really cool guy, so I enjoyed the whole process,” she told MTV News on the set of the video. “I just wanted to make it a bit easier, ’cause the Fantasy Ride is a world of fantasy and fun. There’s just so many different worlds I want to take my fans.”
T-Pain had mutual love for Ciara. “The record came together basically with me and Ciara working for days in the studio, and we got pressured to … make a song,” he said. “The one we finished was ‘Go Girl.’ We had a lot of fun. She was dancing. I was trying to dance as good as her!”
Ciara is preaching control on the song and in her professional life. The 22-year-old singer took the reins as the album’s executive producer, getting everyone from Ne-Yo to Missy Elliott to Young Jeezy to make cameos. “I have a song with Missy, and it’s crazy and out of this world,” she said. “The energy is to the 10th power again.”
Ciara also invited some fresh faces aboard the Fantasy Ride. “I worked with Danja [and] a lot of new producers, too, which I’m really excited about,” she said. “There’s nothing like new, fresh talent. This album has opened up a little bit with different vibes and energies. I wanted to bring in different writers. I’m excited.”
The biggest theme fans will find on the album is Ciara’s burgeoning womanhood (something that caused controversy during her recent cover shot for Vibe, for which the singer insisted she was clothed and the magazine insisted she wasn’t). “I’m definitely embracing myself more and more each day as a woman,” she said. “It’s a feeling you can’t really describe fully, but I know I feel good, and I’m learning more about myself every day as a woman.”

of my life and the new layers are surfacing. So much has
changed for me
especially as a young woman and I wanted to express that. There
was talk
about me being upset about the shoot. When I look at the photos, I do
think
they are beautiful photos and I am proud of my body, I was bothered
because
I did indeed have on items that were removed.I know that it was vibes
mission to do something beautiful and to present me in a nice light I just
think
it would have been appropriate for them to get my approval to do such
a thing
before doing it.. I don't want this to keep going; I just wanted to
talk to u
guys before I went totally silent on this topic. There are so many
more great
things to talk about like my LP and its on the way!! I promise
you're in for a
